Friction and wear among components of certain models of metal hip implants release metal debris into both the bloodstream and the tissue surrounding the implant. The defective nature of these hip implants can cause bone and tissue necrosis, metallosis, hip fractures and dislocation, and one or more revision surgeries. The release of toxic metal ions (such as cobalt and chromium) can cause pain, inflammation and other severe problems, such as inflammation, cardiac, neurological, renal or thyroid dysfunction.

Stryker LFIT V40 CoCr Femoral Head

On August 29, 2016, Stryker sent a recall notice to surgeons who had implanted or reported problems with Stryker LFIT Anatomic cobalt chromium V40 femoral heads made before 2011. Stryker notified the FDA, who required the manufacturer to quarantine all affected devices. More than 42,000 of these defective femoral heads were manufactured. On October 11, 2016, Stryker sent an updated recall notice to affected victims after additional lot numbers of defective devices were identified. Cases involving these products are likely to be consolidated in March 2017. If you or a loved one was implanted with a recalled hip replacement and suffered health problems, you may have a claim for damages.

Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Implant

Stryker has recalled its Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular hip implant stem components. Stryker’s recall of these metal hip implant devices is associated with the widely-reported problems of metal-on-metal hip implant design. In November 2014, Stryker agreed to pay approximately $1.4 billion to settle thousands of these cases. In December 2016, Stryker agreed to a second round of settlements, to resolve the outstanding claims of eligible plaintiffs who underwent a revision surgery by December 19, 2016.

DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits

In addition, DePuy (a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary) manufactured similarly defective hip implants. In March 2016, a jury awarded approximately $500 million in compensatory and punitive damages to five plaintiffs in the second bellwether trial involving DePuy’s Pinnacle Hip implant. In December 2016, a jury awarded over $1 billion in compensatory and punitive damages to six plaintiffs in the third bellwether trial involving DePuy’s Pinnacle Hip implant.
